giane ice cream

People just keep telling me it only gets hotter in August, and I just do not understand how that is possible, but luckily, I’m never far from a potential ice cream cone.

I have been processing so much in my head lately, anticipating my departure, getting ready to sit down and write a manifesto of sorts about all the things i’ve learned here in New York, and what life means here, and how i’m a new person for my experience, in so many ways…. i have been thinking of things to comment on every day; funny things, sad things, cool things, creative things, tragic things, crazy things, all this and that, but now, my time has been extended here in New York! I was due to fly back tomorrow (Saturday) however I’ve just landed an internship at Kenneth Cole, and starting Monday, I’ll be there daily! I have a return flight to California in about a month, so we’ll see how it all goes! JetBlue is pretty great about letting you change your flight… Rose, as well as Melinda, have so graciously offered to continue to look after me. I am so thankful to have more time here, to continue in my pursuits, to enjoy my friends here (new and existing) and to take in even more of New York. I haven’t eaten Pastrami, I haven’t been to the Statue of Liberty, I haven’t gone to the Whitney or Folk Art Museum, I haven’t seen the Chanel Exhibit at the Met., and many, many other things…

School is closed until the Fall term starts, so I’ll have to figure out another way to upload new photos (like the ones of camo bear2, who is on a FedEx plane somewhere on her way to Seattle, just in time for Monday’s deadline!) Have a good weekend!

Sandwich Belt

One project was to make a sandwich belt, which basically just needed to be two pieces of leather sandwiched (glued) to bonded leather. So I made mine reversable, silver metallic on one side, green on the other. I cut the circular shapes using an X-acto knife, not so fun when it’s a fatty little sandwich! I used some rivets and some cord and beads to trim it. I think the only thing connecting this with my theme is the round shape, and perhaps the colors… i also made a standard looking belt, natural-colored leather with brass buckle, nothing fancy, but forgot to photograph it! I’ll put it up later.

A new take on a granny-ish style, this frame bag is made with orange metallic calfskin leather, lined with a printed flower cotton eyelit fabric, brass frame and chain with plastic fish attached to the chain. Funky shape!

Can you see the little plastic fish attached to the chain handle? Goes with my nautical, ocean resort theme!

Drawstring Bag…. done!

We were mandated to make a drawstring bag, not my favorite style mind you, but it did teach us many techniques we may want to use in designing patterns for other types of bags… I am just glad it is done, my fingers are all intact from using the industrial machines, and I came to the humble realization that if I worked in a factory drafting, cutting or sewing for a living, I would have been fired by now! I took my sweet time figuring out every single piece of this thing… and now I have to crank out the frame bag super super fast. I can’t believe that this might be my last week of school, I’m sad it’s almost over!

Here’s Neubela, my classmate and chatty partner-in-crime, modeling my latest bag. The leather is silver metallic calfskin, and the (very wide) straps are attached using 2 gromets. It’s hand-sewn, and features a cotton toile lining. Thanks for modeling Neubela! Doesn’t she look great?!
