I spent the weekend in New Jersey with Melinda and family… Friday night was dinner and dancing in Philadelphia, Saturday we shopped, and Sunday we went to the Jersey Shore! We even got in the water! It was about 105 degrees all weekend, very hot, the perfect time to relax under an umbrella at the shore! Tomorrow, back to work!

Cheesecloth and Wax

Various sizes, many are 12′ x 2′
I installed this in a familiar hallway at PSU, after laboriously working on the pieces at my shared art studio next to the Goodfoot in SE Portland. I first took sheets of cheesecloth and brushed them with melted wax, then hand-sewed the flat pieces of waxy cheesecloth into cylindar shapes and hung them in this hallway. Some touch the ground, others do not. It was a messy, “process” piece; I spent many hours brushing on wax onto every square inch cheesecloth, because everybody knows how flimsy it is… sometimes I used several layers in certain areas to get a certain built-up effect. I loved making it though, the end effect of the textures were very interesting and I guess I was going through a period of self-inflicted torture, after drawing the piegeon anatomy, I needed a 3-D piece to spend lots of time on! Of course I imagined making hundreds of these cylinders, so that that they filled an entire hallway, at least I got a good little sized grouping. Happy Weekend!

I about lost my mind working on this one. But it was a test to see if I could draw anatomically correct, even though I have no patience for it.

I know people don’t like pigeons, but I don’t have quite the same hate for them as most I guess. I’m sure it’s not their choice to live as city pests… and just look at their shape, it’s quite a cute shape I’d say!

My obsession with birds manifested itself into many a variety of art… I did a large scale (18″ x 24″) triptych of these piegeons in an alternative drawing class a few summers back.

Copper Lamp, lights out!

I have been diligently working on my portfolio this week, and I have found many old slides and photos and files from my days as a full-time artist/student. Here’s one pieces, it’s a copper lamp with acrylic, made in 2002. I bent the copper and used a jewlers saw to slice out the pieces for the acrylic to slide in. Maybe I’ll do a weekly post featuring the stuff I’ve uncovered, you can find more of it (but not all, there’s even more) in my “Made it” flickr set. Happy weekend!

Camobear2

Here she is, skinny limbs and all! Camobear2 is the schmancy show up in Seattle, with many other stuffies.

About her; What do you do when the heat index is over 105 and you need camoflauge material, but don’t feel like searching all over the garment district for it? Go to Dr. Jays and buy a 3XL camo shirt for $9.99! And what if you can’t find polyfill anywhere? You buy a $1.10 bag of cotton balls from Duane Reade! So the irony is the camo fabric is a cotton/poly blend, but inside, she’s all cotton! I am going to experiment a bit with the shape but plan to make more to try to raise a little income over here!

looking for love…
