Works in progress…

print on wood panel
This is a print from a drawing that I did by hand, and colored digitally, and then applied to a wood panel and varnished. Working with alternatives to framing, for reproductions.

I just made these collages from a few small washed up pieces of wood and parts of my illustration reproductions. I am excited by chopping up these little worlds I have drawn on a clean sheet of paper, because I look at each element differently. I love to draw in a really crowded way, but doing this forces another look at what I have drawn and the way I have put it all together. And, I am really focused on finding unique and alternative methods to framing, for art. Especially considering I have to find an efficient way to transport a lot of merchandise for the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn in June. Frames have glass, and glass breaks. Plus these other methods make for a more unique piece I think. Still experimenting!

Look closely, can you see what this pattern is made out of? A horse from this drawing. I am working on getting things ready to screenprint for Brooklyn.

I have been meaning to mention a few of my creative friends who are making things happen lately…

My talented friend Ian just wrote this great book entitled Paralle Strokes, If you are at all interested in typography and graffiti I highly recommend it! You can purchase it for only $25 with free shipping! Check it out!!!

My friend and co-worker Marka just had a show in L.A. for a new toy release, he designs these amazing mini-gods that also function as speakers, and he also paints, draws, you name it.

My friend Nancy, whom I went to the Fashion Institute in NYC with and studied handbag design, just launched a website with her beautiful handbag collections, please check them out!

I am so proud and inspired of my creative friends!

Found Objects

found objectsfound objects
We found this lovely piece of wood with screws and nails already attached (with a lovely natural ocean patina) washed up on the beach. We have been collecting the small objects as well, and just placed them on the board. This weathered piece hangs out in the bathroom now with some other little lovely things, including a mold of my teeth from the 80’s when I had braces, a lovely ceramic tooth shadow box made by my friend Kristine in Portland. And a couple of blue fish that somehow made their way into our cart at Target. I think the key to having art in your bathroom, is to have ceramic pieces or things that are meant to slowly weather with the humidity.

Time to get out

Spring is finally here! It is so nice to open all the windows and air out the house, get outside for a bit of sun, etc. I actually wore flip flops to the beach this weekend, no more scenes like this. We went to this over the weekend and acquired a new art piece! Spring is so great!

Totally Not Art-Related

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

I told myself a while back, that this blog was supposed to be about art and stuff. But for so long it was just about my life, so it’s hard to edit these personal posts even though there is plenty of work and art to talk about.

We have been searching constantly (but in a fun way) for any idea of what our beloved little Beppo might be… What kind of dog is this stray we have adopted? So cute, but also obviously wierd, so that people we meet at the park actually laugh and say “what happened to that?” Anyway, we now think we know what he is. We think he is a Chiweenie! A Chihuahua Wiener dog mix! Laugh at this baby doggie photo because I think it was how Beppo must have looked as a pup. The first photo I found on the internet. The second is of our 12 month old random adopted mutt rescue dog. Hahahahahha.

Ok. More art coming soon. I promise.

Blond Bob Ambition

I am now a blond, and Cowboy loves me even more because he says we look more related. I’ve been blond before, around 2003 I think, but this time I’m going all the way. I’m going for platinum. It will take a few sessions of lightening, I’ve already spent 3 hours, through multiple rounds of processing, in order to lift out all of the color my hair has been. Over the next month or two, I will be platinum, and I can’t wait. I have been looking forward to some sort of change, to invite the Springtime in! I cannot explain the fun it is, to do something that feels re-inventive. And after all, it’s just hair. It always grows back, and can always be altered at any moment. Hey, now I match my Mom too!

Also, my talented friend Sarah and I got accepted into the Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair, which is June 14th and 15th! Wahoo! We are so excited!

A lot of pink and yellow

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

I never really consciously realized how I seem to be working in similar color palette to my my site header. Hah. Lots of pinks and yellows, and saturated tones. I have been working on the little sewn pieces, here is some progress…

I also have multiple bird projects going on. As always, many things in multiple phases of completeness!

I picked up the remaining pieces from my art show and will be photographing them to post in my shop just as soon as I get some nice sunlight! I had kind of forgotten how many pieces I had made (more than I remembered), and how large some of them are. Everything is professionally framed and matted, and looks so nice!

Mini applique tee’s

applique tees
I am in the process of making more of these mini 6″ x 6″ canvas tee’s, with appliques. As much as I want to draw these intensive drawings again, work has me wiped out and seeking to create something a little lighter right now, this is fitting the bill! I will be posting some this weekend in my online shop!

Baby Light-up Hiking Boot

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Remember this I was working on? Well with a few little adjustments (some added embroidery, etc) I finally got the sample back from the factory. The middle of the flowers light up when the kid walks. It’s really fun to work on kids shoes, because cute is the priority, and you know, that’s pretty much how I approach a lot of design, hoping it captures “cute.” I’ll show you more, later. Currently I am working on what seems like a billion different shoes for our Spring Summer 2009 collection, and my head is in a million different places; beach thongs, strappy sandals, peep toes, skimmers, infant shoes…
