Paper Cuts

I am working feverishly on my piece that is in the show SK8 or Die IV at Youngblood Gallery. I have been thinking for months about what I wanted to do to my skateboard deck, and you’ve seen some of my recent process here and here but I wanted to do something a little different than just paint. I wanted to create paper cuts that could serve as stencils, and create a more high-contrast, graphical execution on the board. I spent a lot of time today working on these, and it felt great to be off of the computer (so busy at work right now I want to cry) and just use my hands freely on something fun and organic and non-technical. Just the way I love to spend many hours on my drawings, I really felt great working on these forever, it was very tedious but also meditative. Do you understand? In addition, I am really addicted to audiobooks and podcasts, and my latest listen was the Natalie Wood biography, which was read by her sister Lana. It was heartbreaking and so engrossing! Anyway, I have a new, larger paper cut I need to finish for my final idea, and I am really excited about it even though it will be a lot of work. I love woodcuts, lino-cuts, 2-dimensional primitive art, folk art and the like… and while I did do paper-cutting in college at one point, I wonder why I haven’t done it sooner? I have a few more tricks up my sleeve!
