Squeezing in Summer

I have a week left before I head over to China for 2 weeks, and it is prime planting season here, finally! They say Memorial Weekend is truly the ’safe’ weekend to start planting (when the threat of frost has gone) but it has been in the 70’s finally, and I didn’t want to miss getting an early start on the garden. As well as some outdoor dining under the grapevine on local seafood! We are digging up more area for a larger garden today, and we are planting; corn, broccoli, red cabbage, mesculin, arugula, carrots, pea pods, tomatoes, rosemary, parsley, oregano, lavender, basil, chamomile, and more! I have already planted dahlias, daisies and wildflowers, nasturtium, lilies, and poppies. Coastal New England gardening is a challenge, because of the inconsistent temperatures, the high-winds, the sandy earth, etc. But it is great fun and reminds me of all the wonderful summers my family spent gardening while growing up in Portland. Flowers and plants and trees and vegetables everywhere!
